Sustaining the Focus on Improvement

H Thomas Johnson (2009) in a forward to the Toyota Kata by Mike Rother came up with the acronyms MBM – Managing by means and MBR – Managing by results. The difference being the realisation that focus on organisation’s routines for improvement and adaptation (Kata), better define the pathway to competitive advantage and long-term organisational survival than the quantitative/financial figures which are usually evaluated after the fact. This can easily be linked to the importance of focus on strong, effective and track able LEADING KPIs in an organisation rather than focus on LAGGING KPIs which seem to be norm Leading KPIs tell you a clear story about the process health and afford the opportunity to correct and adapt the process towards the strategic goal. In simple terms it is about being proactive in the journey towards achieving your goals.
