Exploring Lean Culture Series - 05 . How Kata Can Help You Build a Lean Culture
Toyota Kata, introduced by Mike Rother, is a structured approach to continuous improvement and presents a powerful framework for building a Lean Culture.
It consists of two main practices: the Improvement Kata (a routine for solving problems) and the Coaching Kata (a method for teaching the routine).
Improvement Kata: A four-step routine for solving problems and achieving goals. The steps are:
Understand the direction or challenge.
Grasp the current condition.
Define the next target condition.
Experiment toward the target condition.
Coaching Kata: A method for teaching the Improvement Kata to others.
By practicing these Kata daily, teams develop a scientific mindset, a habit of continuous improvement – learning to experiment, adapt, and improve. This approach helps organizations build a Lean Culture by making continuous improvement a habit, not just an initiative, in addition to making problem-solving and experimentation part of everyday work.
